"The Bucks lock horns with the Bulls in Tuesday clash"

Match Date : December 1st, 2020 7:45 pm
Competition : National League North
Ground : New Bucks Head
Kick Off : 19:45

The Bucks lock horns with the Bulls on Tuesday night at the New Bucks Head.

After reforming as Hereford FC at the end of 2014, the Bulls won three successive league titles as they swiftly climbed back up the pyramid. But the Bulls’ charge up the leagues has stalled in recent years. Hereford have registered 17th and 16th place finishes in their two seasons in the National League North, while the Edgar Street club have made a middling start to the current campaign.

Alongside Brackley Town, the Bulls were the division’s draw specialists last season, recording 12 stalemates in the shortened 2019/20 campaign. And Josh Gowling’s side seem to be continuing in a similar vein this year, having drawn three of their seven league games so far this season. The Bulls currently sit in 15th with nine points from seven league games.

Current boss Gowling took the reins at Edgar Street on an interim basis in January 2020 before he the appointment was made permanent in the summer. And Gowling, assisted by the vastly-experienced Steve Burr, wasted no time in reshaping his squad with a host of experienced arrivals. Keeper Paul White arrived from Kettering Town, left back Dan Jones joined from Cambridge United, veteran midfielder Giles Coke returns to non-league after 15 years in league football, while former Buck James McQuilkin returned for his second spell at Edgar Street.

The Bucks haven’t beaten the Bulls in four encounters since they reformed in 2014. Games between the Bulls and the Bucks are usually tight affairs – neither side has scored more than once in any of those four matches – with the two sides drawing twice and Hereford coming out on top on the other two occasions, including the Bulls’ 1-0 win at Edgar Street last season. The game at the New Bucks Head was among those that were cancelled as a result of the shortened season.

Despite a raft of injuries and suspensions, the Bucks have impressed in recent weeks, picking up three wins from four. In fact, Saturday’s 2-0 win over Guiseley saw Gavin Cowan’s men pick up back-to-back league wins for the first time since last Christmas. And another three points on Tuesday would see the Bucks strengthen their position in the promotion picture.
